Hot press sintering - Encyclopedia

Time:2024-01-10 13:53

Hot press sintering is a powder metallurgy process carried out under high temperature and high pressure, aimed at preparing dense metal, ceramic or alloy products. This process combines high-temperature sintering and pressure treatment, which combines powder particles through hot pressing to ultimately form high-performance engineering materials. Research institutes and laboratories conduct hot pressing sintering treatment on hard alloys, functional ceramics, powder metallurgy, etc. under high temperature and high vacuum conditions, and can also perform hot pressing forming sintering under the protection of inert gas.

Two common hot pressing furnaces

1.The process of hot pressing sintering:

① Due to the simultaneous heating and pressurization, the powder is in a thermoplastic state, which facilitates the contact diffusion and flow mass transfer of particles, resulting in a molding pressure of only 1/10 of that of cold pressing.

② Hot pressing sintering can lower the sintering temperature, shorten the sintering time, and resist grain growth, resulting in products with small grains, high density, and good mechanical and electrical properties.

③ Without the need for sintering or forming aids, ultra-high purity ceramic products can be produced.

2. The steps of hot pressing sintering:

① Powder preparation: begins with the selection and preparation of powders. Powders are usually fine powders of metals, ceramics, or alloys, and their particle size and distribution are crucial to the performance of the final product.

② Mixing and pressing: Mix the powder and use a mold to press the mixed powder to form the desired shape of the green body (unsintered workpiece).

③ Hot sintering: Green bodies are sintered at high temperatures, allowing powder particles to diffuse and combine with each other through the surface. In this step, the material begins to solidify, but there may still be small pores.

④ Hot pressing treatment: After hot sintering, place the green body in a high temperature and high pressure environment for hot pressing treatment. This step helps to further reduce residual pores and improve the density and strength of the material.

⑤ Cooling: After hot pressing treatment, the material is cooled. During the cooling process, the crystal structure of the material may change, affecting the final performance.

3.Application areas of hot press sintering:

① Hard alloy manufacturing: Hot press sintering is widely used in the manufacturing of hard alloys (hard metals), for the production of cutting tools, abrasives, and other wear-resistant components.

② Ceramic products: used to prepare high-performance ceramic products, such as ceramic cutting tools, ceramic ball milling media, etc.

③ Metal powder metallurgy: suitable for the field of metal powder metallurgy, preparing high-strength and high-density metal components.

④ Composite material manufacturing: used to prepare composite materials with superior performance for metal based, ceramic based, or hybrid based materials.

4.The characteristics and advantages of hot press sintering:

① Density: Hot press sintering can reduce pores under high temperature and pressure, achieve material densification, and improve density and hardness.

② Clear grain boundaries: Due to the diffusion of particles at high temperatures, the grain boundaries are clear, which helps to improve the strength of the material.

③ Customizability: The hot pressing sintering process parameters can be adjusted according to specific needs to achieve customization of material properties.

④ High performance materials: Materials prepared by hot pressing sintering usually have excellent mechanical properties, thermal properties, and wear resistance.

5.What to pay attention to when choosing a hot press sintering furnace:

① Equipment cost: The cost of high-temperature and high-pressure equipment is relatively high, and investment costs may need to be considered.

② Material selection: Different materials have different adaptability to hot pressing sintering, and suitable materials need to be selected according to specific applications.

③ Microstructural control: Precise process control is required to control the microstructural changes during the hot pressing sintering process.

④ Do you need to pass gas or vacuum, and choose whether you need a vacuum hot pressing furnace or a tube hot pressing furnace, etc.

Summary: Hot press sintering is a highly industrialized preparation method that can be used to produce high-performance, complex shaped engineering materials, and is widely used in multiple industrial fields. When selecting equipment, it is important to consider your own needs, such as heating temperature, ventilation, pressure, and vacuum pumping, to choose a furnace type that is suitable for your materials and more cost-effective!
